Questions About Zika

zika_1
“Zika virus disease is caused by the Zika virus, which is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting up to a week, and many people do not have symptoms or will have only mild symptoms. However, Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly and other severe brain defects.”

NIOSH Fast Facts: Protecting Yourself from Stinging Insects

bee-sting-home-remedies“Outdoor workers are at risk of being stung by flying insects (bees, wasps, and hornets) and fire ants. While most stings cause only mild discomfort, some may result in severe allergic reactions that require immediate medical care and may cause death.” Read more here: https://www.linkedin.com/organization-guest/company/ameribest-home-care?challengeId=AQGGqU14rU0JjAAAAXKeutHoTqDI-q657ky0hcWeXBbRPKSSVeENaMwoX0_Ugk-x8KsEKUVCC5d5K5k3vxQHY3N_aMLa3LruJg&submissionId=9e570f1a-8636-1716-5a07-5b8e2363e265

Heat Stress

Karachi-weather-2
“Case Study:
Heat Stroke a 44-year-old male worker died of heat stroke while
working on a North Carolina farm. The man had been
working in the fields for about a week. On August 1st,
the heat index was between 100 °F and 110 °F. Around
3 p.m., the worker complained to the crew leader that
he was feeling ill. He drank some water and was driven
to the employee housing and left alone. He was found
unconscious 45 minutes later. Emergency personnel took

Facts about “Hot Tub Rash”

“Reduce the Risk of Hot Tub Rash:
• Remove your swimsuit and shower with soap after getting out of
the water.
• Clean your swimsuit after getting out of the water.
• Ask your pool/hot tub operator if disinfectant (for example, chlorine)
and pH levels are checked at least twice per day—hot tubs and pools
with good disinfectant and pH control are less likely to spread germs.
• Use pool test strips to check the pool or hot tub yourself for adequate
disinfectant (chlorine or bromine) levels. CDC recommends for pools
and hot tubs that:
» Pools: free chlorine (1–3 parts per million or ppm)
» Hot Tubs: free chlorine (2–4 ppm) or bromine (4–6 ppm).
» Both hot tubs and pools should have a pH level of 7.2–7.8.”

There is no link between vaccines and autism.

autism-facts-graphic2_1

“There is no link between vaccines and autism.
Some people have had concerns that ASD might be linked to the vaccines children receive, but studies have shown that there is no link between receiving vaccines and developing ASD. In 2011, an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on eight vaccines given to children and adults found that with rare exceptions, these vaccines are very safe.

A 2013 CDC study [PDF – 204 KB] added to the research showing that vaccines do not cause ASD. The study looked at the number of antigens (substances in vaccines that cause the body’s immune system to produce disease-fighting antibodies) from vaccines during the first two years of life. The results showed that the total amount of antigen from vaccines received was the same between children with ASD and those that did not have ASD.”

Child Injury

“Injuries are the leading cause of death in children ages 19 and younger. But most child injuries can be prevented. Parents and caregivers can play a life-saving role in protecting children from injuries.”

Drowning, Injury, & Sun Protection

lifeguard

“Before going to the beach, visiting the pool, launching your boat, or heading out into the sun, it’s important to understand how to avoid injuries and protect yourself from the sun. The resources listed on this page will help you learn how to protect yourself and your family from these public health issues.”

Parasites

“Naegleria is an ameba (single-celled living organism) commonly found in warm freshwater (for example, lakes, rivers, and hot springs) and soil. Only one species (type) of Naegleria infects people: Naegleria fowleri.

Naegleria fowleri infects people when water containing the ameba enters the body through the nose. This typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater places, like lakes and rivers. The Naegleria fowleri ameba then travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys the brain tissue.

You cannot be infected with Naegleria fowleri by drinking contaminated water. In very rare instances, Naegleria infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources (such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or contaminated tap water) enters the nose, for example when people submerge their heads or cleanse their noses during religious practices, and when people irrigate their sinuses (nose) using contaminated tap water. Naegleria fowleri has not been shown to spread via water vapor or aerosol droplets (such as shower mist or vapor from a humidifier).”

How to Prevent Latex Allergies

3be476b0ecbdcf8f2358b4ef61733e70
“Latex products are made from natural rubber, and sensitivity can develop after repeated exposure. Limiting exposure to latex can help prevent allergic reactions for both home healthcare workers and their clients.
EMPLOYERS SHOULD
• Provide workers with non-latex gloves when there is little contact-us with infectious material.
• Consider the use of vinyl, nitrile, or polymer gloves appropriate for infectious materials.
• Provide reduced-protein, powder-free gloves, if latex gloves are selected for use with infectious materials.
• Provide training to workers on latex allergy.
• Promptly arrange a medical evaluation for workers with symptoms of latex allergy. Provide these employees with non-latex gloves”.
