Flu vs Cold

Flu Symptoms & Possible Complications - Ameribest Home Care

This is a great article on how to tell the difference between the flu and a cold. Anyone else ask this question all the time? It is important to know the signs of when you need to see a doctor.

“Anyone can get the flu (even healthy people), and serious problems related to the flu can happen at any age, but some people are at high risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. This includes people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease),pregnant women, and young children.”

Say No to Raw Dough.

Say No to Raw Dough - Ameribest Home Care
“For many people, the holiday season is the perfect time to spend time together in the kitchen and share delicious baked foods and desserts. Follow these safety tips to help you and your loved ones stay healthy when handling raw dough. When you prepare homemade cookie dough, cake mixes, or even bread, you may be tempted to taste a bite before it is fully cooked. But steer clear of this temptation—eating or tasting unbaked products that are intended to be cooked, such as dough or batter, can make you sick. Children can get sick from handling or eating raw dough used for crafts or play clay, too.”

Walking, other exercise helps seniors stay mobile, independent

Home Сare VS Assisted Living in Philadelphia PA: Making the Right Choice
“Some older people may have the impression that they have passed the age at which starting an exercise program will do them any good. According to the LIFE results, taking up exercise at any age offers benefits down the road.
Starting an exercise program can be a challenge no matter what stage of life you are in. It’s best to start slow. Exercising for just 10 minutes to begin with is great. Then gradually work your way up.
The goals for the volunteers in the LIFE trial are good ones for all of us. They include:
• Get at least 150 minutes per week of walking or other moderate intensity exercise
• Do resistance training with weights or machines two or three times a week, but not two days in a row.
• Stretch and do other activities that improve flexibility and balance every day.”

Winter safety

Winter Weather - Ameribest Home Care
“Take These Steps for Your Home Many people prefer to remain indoors in the winter, but staying inside is no guarantee of safety. Take these steps to keep your home safe and warm during the winter months. Winterize your home. Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows. Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls. Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks. Check your heating systems.Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside.Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys. Install a smoke detector. Test batteries monthly and replace them twice a year. Have a safe alternate heating source and alternate fuels available. Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) emergencies. Install a CO detector to alert you of the presence of the deadly, odorless, colorless gas. Check batteries when you change your clocks in the fall and spring. Learn symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.”
